CDs: Considered by most to be the end-all, be-all format. THEY ARE NOT!!!
Let me put it to you this way: the main advantage touted by CDs is that they are ‘digital,’ meaning they are based on computer technology. They were developed by Phillips and Sony in 1980-1982… meaning that the computer technology they are based on is the computer technology of 1980-1982. Yeaaaaah… we’ve come a long way. Despite the fact that most processors are now 64-bit CDs are trapped at 16-bit, and as DVD and blu-ray have shown you can hold a LOT more data on a disc of that size.
For a long time CDs were the best that at least the digital world had to offer, but now we have better options: SACD (Super Audio CD), DVD-A (DVD-Audio) and now blu-ray Audio, all of which offer superior sound to the CD. SACD and DVD-A have both been on the market for close to ten years and still an astonishingly small percentage of people know about them. DVD-As can even be played on any ordinary DVD player, and if you have a higher end unit odds are it can play SACDs as well. If you have a blu-ray player quite possibly you can play all three of these formats.
On CDs sound data is ‘sampled’ at 44.1 khz, meaning that every second you hear 44,100 fragments of sound. This sounds like a lot, but considering that on SACD the sample-rate is 2.8 mhz (2,800,000 fragments), it’s really not. DVD-A is similar, I’m sure blu-ray is even higher.
Personally I like SACD, as it’s the only ‘new’ format strictly designed for audio. Several thousand titles are available, the more people buy the more titles become available. Previously it was risky buying a new format because you could end up with an unsupported, useless unit. Now you don’t even have to buy a dedicated unit: the next time you buy a DVD/blu-ray player look for an SACD logo on it. It tells companies and stores that people are buying SACD equipment, and as a movie player it will still be good for something even if you don’t use the SACD features. And if one of these formats finally takes off like I hope they do, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Track List For A Long Ride
Tomorrow (erm, today) Dad and I are doing the long drive back from Kansas. We have decided as it is not long enough that we should make it longer by taking US-40 rather than I-70. It will take probably a day and a half to get back to Cincinnati, so we need lots and lots of CDs.
My burn list:
The Traveling Wilburys- Vol. 1
10,000 Maniacs- In My Tribe
She & Him- Vol. 1
Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars- Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy
Bobby Darin- The Bobby Darin Story
Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians- Shooting Rubber Bands At The Stars
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme
John Fahey- The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death
The Magnetic Fields- The Charm Of The Highway Strip
*** BONUS: All 12 original radio episodes of the BBC Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Additional CDs of mine that I expect will get played:
Linda Perry- In Flight
Surfjan Stevens- Illinois
The Kinks- Lola Vs Powerman and the Money-Go-Round, Part One
The Magnetic Fields- 69 Love Songs [selections]
The Beatles- Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Beatles- The Beatles (White Album)
Sort of a nice jazzy mix, we’ll see how it equates with the drive.

my reblog button fucked up and i almost had a heart attack
Fortunately this isn’t an issue locally, because in my universe there are no muggles. Just people… some of whom happen to also be wizards.
